"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood seems to be recovering and is currently getting treatment after she reportedly attempted suicide earlier this week. Gary Shirley, the father of their daughter, Leah, took to Twitter on Thursday (June 16) to update everyone on the 21-year-old's condition.

"Amber is safe and getting the help she needs right now," he wrote. "Thanks for your prayers and support."

MTV confirmed that Portwood had been hospitalized earlier this week. "Our understanding is that Amber has been admitted to a local hospital but we have not been able to confirm the accuracy of any reports being circulated and are waiting for further details," said a statement.

People.com reports that Portwood was taken to a hospital near her home in Indiana on Tuesday. And police told RadarOnline.com that "Portwood was depressed and threatening to end her life" when they received a call about her. "The victim, who did not appear to be injured, was transported to a local medical facility for further evaluation."

Little else is known about her current condition, but in an interview with People.com last year, Portwood talked about her struggles. "I don't think I'm bipolar, to be honest with you," she said. "I'm just really outgoing. I think everybody thinks they're bipolar these days. You're a teenager, you have hormones. You're gonna switch up every two seconds!"

Last December, Portwood was arrested and charged with felony domestic battery and child neglect, stemming from actions captured on the reality television series. An investigation into Portwood's behavior was opened after she was seen abusing Shirley on the show, both physically and verbally, twice in front of their child.

People struggling with a history of depression or other emotional health issues are more likely to consider or attempt suicide. That's why it's important to reach out for help before these problems get out of hand.
