Frank Ocean Charms New York Audience

Odd Future crooner wins over Bowery Ballroom with soulful covers and originals, including new songs 'Super Rich Kids' and 'Disillusioned.'
By Rob Markman

Be it for a crowd of one or 100, you get the feeling that Frank Ocean would be just as charmingly awkward when performing tracks from his breakthrough digital album Nostalgia, Ultra. On Monday evening, the Odd Future singer/songwriter performed his second in as many days, making up for the scheduled November 6 concert that was canceled, citing illness.

There was no opening act or host for the evening, just Ocean, who stormed the Bowery Ballroom stage at exactly 9:30 p.m. wearing a black jacket, white button-down shirt and a red bandana tied around his forehead. "You think I'd leave your side baby/ You know me better than that," he sang, starting out his set with a soulful rendition of Sade's "By Your Side." As the 23-year-old New Orleans export serenaded the crowd, the screen behind him played clips of old Western films and changed themes with each song: sometimes playing scenes from "Boyz n the Hood," other times playing animated "Dragon Ball Z" clips.

After the opening number, Frank addressed the crowd, professed his love for NYC and revealed to fans that he first fell in love, then ultimately got his heart broken, in Southern California. The charming anecdote set up "Thinking About Forever," a hopelessly romantic slow jam about recapturing lost love.

Ocean isn't the type of singer who rips off his shirt, nor does he show any signs of being a dancer — two qualities typically associated with modern-day crooners. Frank, however, remains relatable on a level most artists are not, which makes him able, in between each song, to simply chat and laugh with the audience, and though he seemed uneasy at times, it was enough to keep his adoring fans engaged. The female portion of the crowd squealed when he eased into "Dust," and when Ocean belted out the opening line from "Swim Good" — "That's a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln Town Car" — most of the crowd shot their hands into the air, swaying them side to side.

Though his die-hards know him for so much more, the OFWGKTA breakout is most popular for his contributions to Jay-Z and Kanye West's inescapable Watch the Throne LP, so of course, he performed his portions of "No Church in the Wild" and "Made in America."

His catalog isn't deep, but for an hour, Ocean kept fans entertained by running through fan favorites and even giving a taste of his next album, singing two new songs: "Super Rich Kids" and the bouncy and bassy "Disillusioned."

The only downfall was that for much of the show, Ocean simply stood center stage, but boy did he sound great. He switched things up on "American Wedding," his heartbreaking flip of the Eagles' classic "Hotel California." For the track's iconic guitar solo, Ocean turned his back to the crowd, faced the screen, picked up a video-game guitar controller and played out the song's closing notes on "Guitar Hero."

The crowd — mixed with industry mainstays, star-gazing girls, frat boys and even a few celebs (Mos Def was in attendance) — ate it up.

After his version of Coldplay's "Strawberry Swing," Ocean said goodnight and left the stage. The crowd stood, demanding an encore, and were granted their wish when Ocean returned to the stage sitting by a piano. He closed with "I Miss You," a song he wrote for Beyoncé's 4, then once again said goodnight and left the stage, "for real this time," he joked.

Britney Spears 'Saddened' By Irish Fan's Death

Britney Spears expressed her condolences Tuesday (October 25) to the family of a fan who died after attending her concert Monday in Dublin, Ireland.

Siobhan Healy, 31, was on a fairground ride called the Tip Top outside the concert venue when she was thrown to the ground and killed instantly. According to the U.K.'s Daily Mail, Healy had attended Spears' concert earlier in the evening at the nearby O2 arena.

"I was saddened to hear of the tragic accident in Dublin," Spears tweeted Tuesday. "My heart goes out to the family. --Britney"

A family friend told the paper that the accident has devastated the residents of Healy's hometown of Willsborough. "The community is very shocked," Michael McGreal said. "I know her family very well, we are all very upset."

An investigation has been launched to find out what caused the accident, with some speculating that the recent severe weather that has swept through Ireland might have been a contributing factor.

Kenneth McFadden, the owner of the company that runs the Tip Top ride, also expressed his condolences. "We can't say [what happened], it all happened so quick," he said. "We are just in bits at the moment, we are just devastated."

McFadden also told the Daily Mail that he has had the Tip Top ride for nearly five years and never experienced any problems with it.

Pet Tags

Man, I'm so irritated.

I just received four pets tags that I ordered for Bev and Mary Margaret (two for Brooklyn and two for LA) and they're all messed up. Not only did they leave off the "Margaret" on Mary Margaret's tags, but the text isn't centered correctly and runs off the right side on all four of them. (The last letter of the address is cut in half.) The tags themselves are also ugly. The edges aren't smoothed out... they look like someone just cut them from a piece of sheet metal and called it a day.

So anyway, I got them this morning on my way to Starbucks (yesterday's mail), so while I was there, I started drafting a strongly-worded letter in my head, like what I was going to say to these people when I sent them back.

And then I saw it.

In tiny print on the bottom of the invoice it said, "Our handicapped employees appreciate your order."

So now I can't send them back. If I did I'd be a total asshole.

I'm just going to order new ones from someplace else. Any recommendations?

Daniel Radcliffe: Actor We're Most Thankful For In 2011

'Harry Potter' star refers to 2011 as 'not a breakout year, a breakaway year.'

After our nods to rising stars Elizabeth Olsen, Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston, MTV Movies' Thankful Week continues with — drum roll, please — the actor we're most thankful for in 2011: Daniel Radcliffe.

Really, what's not to like about this talented young man? He's dazzled audiences for more than a decade as "the boy who lived" in eight "Harry Potter" films and has most recently been the talk of the Great White Way with his critically acclaimed work in the musical "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying." We feel pretty confident in saying that the future looks bright for this guy.

MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe to get a sense of how he's feeling post-Potter and where he wants to be in 10 years.

MTV: This is your first full year working outside "Harry Potter." How has it been?

Daniel Radcliffe: It's been a great first year away from "Potter." It's been very successful. I've done some work I'm really proud of in that time, particularly onstage in "How to Succeed." Just the process of doing it and doing it and doing it, I've got so much better, I think, during the run, as is the way it should be. It's been a great year, but I think next year is the big one for me. "The Woman in Black" is coming out, and I've also got a couple other things I'll be doing. The next two or three years are going to be pretty important, I think, and if [2011] is not a breakout year, it's a breakaway year.

MTV : What was the highlight for you this year?

Radcliffe: [Performing at] the Tony Awards, definitely. We were the first show to perform, and there is just that weird moment when you're all standing there. I haven't been that nervous in a long time. I don't think I was as nervous on our opening night as I was at the Tonys. I was really, really nervous. Suddenly that huge LED screen goes up, and you're all revealed like prizes on a game show, and Al Pacino is in the front row, sitting next to Bobby Cannavale, sitting next to Mark Rylance, all these brilliant actors, and you have to do your number. That's probably a surreal, weird triumphant moment of that year, performing on the Tonys. That's pretty cool. That's something I will be able to tell my grandchildren that I did.

MTV : What have you learned about yourself and your work abilities?

Radcliffe: I think the most vital thing I've learned — and this is a thing I have to adapt and be able to find throughout my career, be it onstage or film in comedy or drama — is that the more I try and suppress my own natural oddness, the less successful I am. I have a slightly staccato way of moving and talking ... the realization hit me that I'm working so hard to try and be something else, and actually, I just have to learn to be my most natural self onstage or onscreen, however that comes across. That is one of the biggest lessons there is: Don't shy away from your own weirdness. Own your oddness.

MTV : Would you consider taking a role in a movie musical?

Radcliffe: Yeah, definitely. My hesitation about doing this one ["How to Succeed"] is that I've played parts for a long time, and I'll have spent a long time with this, and I want my career to be about getting as many different characters under my belt as I possibly can. But yeah, I would love to, provided it was the right one, because they can go wrong. They can go spectacularly wrong, so we'll see.

MTV : Looking back at "Potter" and going through the huge promotional push surrounding the final film, was any of that surprising in any way even though you'd been through it so many times before?

Radcliffe: It's always what it is. I have a slight tendency when you're doing these insane press days where you do a few interviews then the red carpet and it's just mad, I have a slight tendency to shut down and go on autopilot just to get through it and not feel completely weirded out by the whole thing. What was strange to me was, in a way I felt slightly bad because I wasn't getting upset like everyone else was. I've seen Rupert Grint cry once, on the last day of filming, when I was also in bits, but I've never seen Rupert get emotional like he did at the premiere ... I cannot go on enough about how much I loved my time on "Potter." It was the most amazing, happy time, but all good things must come to an end. We couldn't have gone on forever. As much as people wanted us to, it would have been terrible. I'm glad to have done it and gone out on such a high note and now be moving on as we all are.

MTV : Do you hope you'll continue to have a relationship with J.K. Rowling?

Radcliffe: I hope so, yeah, I really hope so. For somebody that was indirectly and directly such a huge influence on my life, I really hope so. I don't know if she's going to write anything else about Harry, but maybe I could direct something in years to come or something; we know each other.

MTV : Looking ahead 10 years, what do you hope to be doing, best and worst case scenario?

Radcliffe: My worst nightmare is that in 10 years, I will be not working and not doing anything. Even if in five years time I decide to leave the film industry and go off and become an archaeologist, even if I'm doing that, that's great, fine. Best-case scenario is that in 10 years time, I'll have got a good few films under my belt, I don't know how many that would be ... suppose we did eight "Potter" movies in 10 [years]; double that, maybe 16? Who knows. Hopefully I'll do a few films with very different parts, very different directors, and ideally, I would have liked to direct something by then; that's the ambition. I do feel having spent so much time on a film set, I would have a very good idea of how to run a film set, how to lead that set and, I don't know, I love telling stories, so I would like that as a job.

Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

Lady Gaga Cuts Ties With Laurieann Gibson

Gibson had been Gaga's creative director for several years.

After a long and fruitful creative partnership, Lady Gaga has broken ties with creative director Laurieann Gibson. MTV News confirmed the split on Monday (November 14), which came after reports that the two women had a serious falling out.

Gibson has been part of Gaga's inner circle since well before the singer became an international superstar, beginning with the choreography for the 2008 "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" video and continuing through the soon-to-be famous steps in clips for "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "Love Game," "Paparazzi" and "Bad Romance."

The pair were closely associated throughout Gaga's rise to fame, with Gibson providing the choreography and artistic input on such landmark videos as "Telephone," "Alejandro" and "Born This Way." Gibson, who previously appeared on MTV's "Making the Band" with Diddy and the "Starmaker" reality show, has been stepping out on her own lately, including a starring role in the BET dance competition show "Born to Dance" and another dance reality series, E!'s "The Dance Scene."

Gibson co-directed Gaga's Judas" video and directed "Yoü and I, "but the women reportedly clashed on the set of the former, with Gibson expressing discomfort with the religious imagery in the clip. According to the Reporter, the tension was already showing during the filming of the "Judas" video, during which Gibson told the magazine, "At one point, there was two completely different views and after the third glass of wine, I was like, 'Listen, I don't want lightning to strike me. I believe in the Gospel and I'm not going there."

Think this is the right move for Gaga? Let us know on Facebook!

She was less adamant when talking to MTV News about the controversy, expressing pride in the final product. "I think the concept stuck with this one because, ultimately, there was a place where we wanted to leave the interpretation up to each individual and not take away [Gaga's] power as a performer, as a dancer, as a star," Gibson explained, alluding to the creative clashes the pair had about the "Born This Way" video. "And to leave the moments for you to interpret and be inspired by the fact that everyone has a Judas in their life and that there is a place of deliverance. For me, I interpret differently than her, and for someone else, they'll interpret it differently."

A spokesperson for Gaga confirmed the split for MTV News.

Gibson also spoke out after she and Gaga failed to see eye-to-eye on the concept for the "Edge of Glory" video. After reports that video vet Joseph Kahn would be directing, Gaga instead went for a simpler cityscape treatment that drew some fire from fans. "Listen u disrespectful f--k they had an issue on set I don't lie!!!!!" Gibson tweeted at the time. "Creative Changes happen always educate ignorant Monster's!!!"

The Reporter noted that relations between the two continued to fray this summer over disagreements about the "Yoü and I" video and Gaga seemed to confirm the end with a November 6 tweet in which she announced that Gibson's former #2, Richard Jackson, is her new choreographer.

Nicki Minaj Announces Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

'Heeeee's baaaacccckkkkk,' MC tweets Tuesday night, revealing that next project is due Valentine's Day.
By James Dinh

Let the good news roll in for Young Money! Not only is Drake predicted to top the Billboard albums chart with his latest effort, Take Care, but labelmate Nicki Minaj announced Tuesday night that her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, will drop in stores on Valentine's Day 2012.

After thanking her 7 million-plus followers on Twitter for celebrating Pink Friday's one-year anniversary, the recent American Music Awards winner hyped up her fans for a very special announcement. "Its only right to announce it on the anniversary of Pink Friday right barbz???" she wrote.

While the Young Money raptress planned a Ustream chat session with fans, the MC eventually just tweeted the big news because of technical difficulties. "Pink Friday : ROMAN RELOADED will be released on Valentines Day, 2012. Heeeee's baaaacccckkkkk," she wrote. "Its not called Roman Reloaded. Its called PINK FRIDAY : ROMAN RELOADED!!!!!! 4 WORDS!!!! Love u guys soooo much!!! VALENTINES DAY biittcchh!"

No word on whether the project will be a reissue of her platinum-selling Pink Friday or a brand-new album, but based on Cash Money boss Birdman's talk of an early 2012 release for her sophomore effort, it appears to be the latter. He also dished that Minaj may even release a single before 2011 wraps up.

Roman Zolanski is just one of Minaj's many alter egos, and the news of his appearance on her forthcoming project is no surprise. Back in August, Minaj told MTV News that she wasn't interested in collaborating with anyone for her next project and that the vibe of the LP would revolve around a certain rap persona.

"I don't know, I don't think I'm hitting up anybody for features for this sophomore album," she revealed backstage at Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Tour. "Roman ... possibly. But I never give away all my secrets."

Are you exited to for Nicki's new album? Let us know in the comments!
