It's Shanghai, 1988. Mornings are slow at the Soviet Consulate. Alexander, the secretary, is napping. The marble halls are dead quiet. Then the telephone rings.
Twenty minutes later Alexander is riding a public bus along Huaihai Lu, to catalog the belongings of Xenia Pavlova, the oldest Russian migr in Shanghai, who has just died. No relatives could be located so a Soviet official must inventory her possessions.
It is a grim job. But it's also the start of one of the most improbable tales cataloged by the Russian Shanghai organization and the Russian Consulate.
Pavlova has lived in Shanghai all her life. For the last 45 years she lived alone.
